INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICE - BULGARIA

     "INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICE BULGARIA" is established in November 2002 in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria as an independent legal entity with non-profit goals on the initiative of International Social Service-Switzerland.

     ISS-Bulgaria is part of the global network of the non-government organization- International Social Service with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and as such works on individual cases of Bulgarian citizens who because of problems, related to migration processes of different nature, are located in a second country and need help and support.

     Since its establishment through implementation of projects primarily in the area of child rights and protection, but related to the development and delivery of social services for children and families the organization have achieved some significant results like:

  1. For the first time the country a new concept for working with care leavers aged over 16 years in order to prepare them for independent living was developed. In the practice of the specialized institutions a place for practical training for independent living named "Protected living space" was introduced " and it found its place in the Regulation for implementation of the Social assistance Act as a Transitional home.
  2. A new type of social service as a transitional form for professional support and accompaniment of care leavers after leaving the institutions in their way to independent life was developed in the municipalities of Sevlievo, Lovech and Veliko Turnovo and it found its place in the Regulation for implementation of the Social assistance Act as a Observed housing.
  3. During 2005 -2006 new social services for children and families were successfully developed in the Complex for social services in Targovishte in the following areas: prevention of child abandonment and placement in an institution, prevention of school dropout, of delinquency, violence prevention; reintegration in the family environment as well as services on adoption and foster care. Several other municipalities- Veliko Tarnovo, Dryanovo, Lyaskovets and Smolyan were supported to develop such services trough projects in a partnership with ISS_Bulgaria.
  4. ISS- Bulgaria develops and provides services for children who as unaccompanied minors and / or victims of trafficking have been returned to the country in in the first Crisis centre for children victims of trafficking in Bulgaria for the period 1 August to 31 December 2006.
  5. Over 300 professionals working in specialized institutions for children were trained in the "life skills" approach; more than 150 young people aged over 15 years in institutions have received training in skills for independent living.
